Deepo is one of the main characters of the Incal saga, being one the few character that appears in all fours installments. He was a concrete seagull, and the pet companion of John DiFool.
He was adopted by John when he was a baby, since his mother was in poor health. From then on, he remained a loyal companion, aiding John in his different pursuits and investigations. Year later, he would swallow the Incal, giving him the ability to speak and perform miracles.
He made his first appearance in the first issue of The Incal, The Black Incal.
Biography[]
Early life[]
For some years after being born Deepo lived with his mother in the streets of the Red Ring. One day some kids were pestering Deepo's mother, when suddenly John DiFool intervened and stopped the abuse. The mother, badly beaten, gave his son to John, so that he could take care of him. John adopted the small seagull and named him Deepo.which he adopts and names Deepo. As morning settles he encounters his dad, who is now out of prison and immediately convinces his son to help him with a criminal scheme.
Meeting Kolbo-5 and Luz[]
After John lost both of his parents the same day, he decided to commit suicide by jumping down Suicide Alley, with Deepo taped to his chest. However, they were saved by Snailhead, an acquaintance of DiFool's mother. After that Snailhead too John under his wing, and allowed him to stay at the Mutant GTO.
However, a few days later, the Mutant GTO was raided by the Prezident's hunchback who commited a massacre. As an act of revenge, John hid one of his father’s inventions (an explosive) in a fish, which then gave to Deepo. Later, Deepo dropped the explosive in the middle of one of the Prezident’s campaigns promoting the war effort against Mega-mex. The attack on the Prezident revealed that the Prezident had actually sent a robot in his place, which enraged the crowd, ensuing another massacre. Thankfully, John was saved by an of-duty cybo-cop named Kolbo-5. John became friends with Kolbo-5, and in order to repair him John and Deepo also dropped an explosive on some cybo-cops, stealing their body parts.
Eventually John became a pre-detective, and one of his first job consisted on taking a particularly ugly aristo, miss Luz De Garra (daughter of the Prime Minister) to St. Prez, the hospital where they would send everyone with the meropa virus. At the hospital Luz forced John and Deepo to urinate in the medication of the people who were sick, just for her amusement, and under the threat of making John lose his pre-detective license. Nevertheless, when John saw Luz holo-make up wore off and he saw her true face, DiFool fell in love with her.
Aiding John in his investigation[]
After Luz recommend John for the position of official private detective, the cybo-cops informed DiFool that before the final confirmation all applicants had to carry out an official investigation on the subject that the applicant desired. After John meditated on his past and realized that many babies from the Red Ring disappeared mysteriously and he himself spent his childhood hidden from the rest of the world, he decided to pursue an investigation into that subject. Unbeknownst to him that was a highly confidential taboo topic, and the Supra-divinoid would try everyting to stop the investigation.
Altough at times Deepo stayed behind with Kolbo-5 in their hideout, other times he would personally accompany John in his investigations. When John infiltrated the Cocaloco Dark factory, he was posing as a pregnant woman, with Deepo hidden in his fake belly. In the factory, DiFool observed how the newborns were being injected with “Top-33 (a mysterious liquid from the Paleo-science lab) in their pineal gland and then taken to the aristo-maternity ward. However, when the Technos were about to perform a caesarian on John, Deepo jumped from under the disguise, and they were discovered, although they managed to escape.
Since DiFool knew that the Top-33 liquid came from the Paleo-science lab, Deepo and Greenie (the eye-cop assigned to John's investigation) infiltrated the Paleo-science lab, entering through a small hole, transmitting everything they saw to Kolbo-5 and John. At the lab, they discovered that the Techno-technos were using a gamete extractor to extract the ova and sperm of two non-putrefied corpses from the mythical “terra prima”, and that the Top-33 was actually made from the living chromosomes of those two “saints”. However, after making a noise Deepo and Greenie were discovered, and the Technos sent cybersphynxes and the Craven after them. Deepo managed to escape through an airshaft thanks to Greenie sacrificing himself to kill the Craven.
Some time later John and Luz also infiltrated the aristo maternity-ward to continue the investigation. At the ward John and Luz discovered that the pineal gland from babies which had been injected with the Top -33, was then inserted into the pineal gland of the “aristo” baby, which made the halo appear. They were soon discovered, but escaped on board of a stretcher, eventually being saved by a group of psycho-anarchists who took them to the sewers.
Kolbo-5 and Deepo tried to find John and Luz's whereabouts using the levi-craft, but the sewer system was to vast, so they gave up, hoping they would eventually return. In the meantime, John and Luz, along the psycho-anarchists were planning to use Diavaloo's imperial broadcast at the cancer-freak championship to reveal the truth (unbeknownst to them there was an informant among the psycho-anarchists, and the Supra-divinoid became aware of their plans). Thus, the Supra-divinoid ordered to have Kolbo-5 and Deepo kidnapped.
Kidnapped by the Supra-divinoid[]
They day of the cancer-freak championship John and Luz managed to break into the stadium and reach Diavaloo but when they were about to reveal the truth they were lowered to an underground room using an elevator platform, leaving the audience hanging with a musical interlude. At that moment, John and Luz found themselves surrounded by all the conspirators, and the Supra-divinoid revealed they had Mr. De Garra, Kolbo-5 and Deepo as prisoners. The Supra-divinoid threatened John and Luz with killing their friends if they told the truth. John and Luz, realizing that in this case love could be more important than truth, decided to not tell the truth so that their friends could live. Thus, instead of revealing the truth to the audience Luz read from a prepared script proffesing her love for Diavaloo, and their friends were spared.
As part of the cover-up, John's memories were erased, and he was told that he was a private detective who had received a blow to the head while on duty, and that he lived in his own conapt with Deepo.
Swallowing the Luminous Incal[]
Aproximately ten years later, John acccidentaly came into possession of the Luminous Incal. Knowing that other forced were after it, he hid it in his conpat. However, while John was away, Deepo swallowed the Incal, which granted him the ability to speak and perform miracles. A crowd started to gather around Deepo, and he started to use his new powers to start curing people and preach. When John returned to his conpat and found a multitude worshipping Deepo, DiFool made him spit out the Luminous Incal. Shortly after, John's conpat was attacked by Bergs, mutants and cybo-cops. John and Deepo attempted to escape but they were caught by the hunchbacks and brought to the Floating Palace.
In Techno City[]
John and Deepo managed to escape from the Floating Palace, by hiding in a funeral train headed to Techno City. At Techno City John discovered that the Technos were building a “Shadow Egg”, but he was apprehended by the Techno-pope. Meanwhile, Deepo was chased by an identification robot, but he escaped by going through a ventilator. At that point he saw how the Techno-pope was about to dissect John to extract the Luminous Incal from him. In order to hel John, Deepo shattered the Techno-pope’s Shadow Crown, momentarily paralyzing him. John was able to escape, and faced the Cardioclaw inside the Generator. John killed the Cardioclaw, revealing the Black Incal. As a result of all the liberated energy the Techno City collapsed.
In the ruins of Techno City, Animah appeared an took the Black Incal from him. Moments later, the Metabaron (following Tanatah's orders) captured John and Deepo.
Journey to the Center of the Planet[]
The Metabaron (who was being coerced by Tantah, keeping Solune captive) brought John and Deepo to the Lair of Amok. Although the Metabaron had done his part of the deal, Tanatah revealed that she was going to kill Solune either way. However, the Metabaron, Solune and John managed to outsmart Tanatah and killed the Amok guards. At that moment Kill Wolfhead, who was one of Tanatah's mercenaries, informed his Queen that the rebellion they had been planning had failed and the Necrodroid was coming for them. Upon learning this fact Tanatah revealed that she was actually the Guardian of the Black Incal and her sister Animah the Guardian of the Luminous Incal, and that both incals needed to be reunited if they wanted to survive.
Thus, John, Deepo, Tanatah, the Metabaron and Solune decided to head to the Center of the Planet, were Animah resided. After going through a whirlpool in the Great Acid Laked the group arrived at the Center of the Planet, and met with Animah, who saved them from some agressive psychorats. Escaping form the Necrodroid, who was also after the Incal, Animah guided the crew to the Interior Sun. At the door of the Interior Sun, each of the characters made peace with each other in order to open the door. After Deepo asked Wolfhead to make peaces DiFool, Kill complied and promised to no longer seek revenge.
Then, the Seven Companions passed through The Mirror, a vibrating doorway that led to the Miraculous Forest of Singing Crystals. Once there, they couldn't brush against the trees, because the sound would resonate throughout the forest and put them to sleep. Deepo, who was curious about the forest, ended up touching the tip of a crystal, and made all fall asleep. However, the Necrodroid, who was also after the Incal and was following The Seven, broke through The Mirror, which woke up all of them again.
The Seven reached the Doorway of Transfiguration. The Incals were reunited, and Solune became the consciousness of a starship that had the abilities of the Incal and was shaped in the form of the two merged pyramids.
As part of the Seven Companions[]
After The Seven unsuccessfully attempted to destroy a Shadow Egg with the Incal Ship, they headed to Aquaend, where they met with the Emperoress and Raimo's forces. In order to convince Raimo of the Incal's power Deepo performed miracle, making a rose appear in Raimo hands. Together, they devised a plan that would need major coordination, which involved hunting wild Medusae using telepathic hooks and joining forces with the Bergs to attack Technogea.
In order to get the help from the Bergs John participated and won the Five Thousand Year Nuptial Games, coming into an alliance with the Protoqueen. With the help from the bergs The Seven managed to neutralize the Shadow Egg and disband the Technos, but the Emperoress was infected by the tenebrae virus.
To destroy the Darkness once and for all, The Seven decided to destroy the Techno-centreur, a being that was totally devoted to the Darkness, and which was hidden in the War Star. The Seven managed to destroy the main processor of the War Star, and Solune won the battle against the Techno-centeur but in the process the barrier of the Light was broken. After the darkened Emperoress was also defeated, Solune was named the new Emperoress. Solune claimed that humanity had to enter a state of deep slumber called the Theta Dream to avoid falling under the influence of the Darkness.
Helping John at Orgargan[]
After the darkened Emperoress was also defeated, Solune was named the new Emperoress. Solune claimed that humanity had to enter a state of deep slumber called the Theta Dream to avoid falling under the influence of the Darkness. Animah convinced John to go to back to the Berg Galaxy, since it was the only galaxy who hadn't enter the Theta Dream.
Upon returning to Orgargan DiFool quickly realized that every person in the planet looked like him because they were actually clones (called "jondiffs") he had fathered with the Protoqueen. He also discovered that since the Protoqueen hated him all jondiffs also hated the original DiFool. Due to this, he was eventually arrested and brought to trial, were they unanimously condemned John to be castrated in the city’s central square. However Deepo managed to convince the Protoqueen to spare John, explining to her that she actually fell in love with the Incal not with John. The Protoqueen made and appearance at the castration ceremony and put an end it. The Orgargan planet agreed to enter the Theta Dream.
Final fight agains the Darkness[]
The Seven went back to the Portal of Transfiguration, so that the united Incal could prepare to absorb the Theta Dream energy generated by the entire human race in the two galaxies. The Seven entered the Theta dream itself, and they were transported to null-time and null-space to confront the Darkness.
In the first circle of the Theta Dream, The Seven started hallucinating nightmares concocted by the Darkness to feed on their inner terror (Deepo's nightmare involved regressing into a chicken), but they eventually realized that the nightmares were only a part of themselves that they were afraid to face. In the second circle The Darkness attacked the Incal itself, so the Incal demanded the energy of all Seven Companions to survive. They all gave their energies, with the exception of John, who wanted to remain himself.
Captured by the Bethacodon in Orh's new dimension[]
After John met Orh, DiFool was transported to a new seemingly identical universe. He suddenly found himself falling down Suicide Alley once again, when he was saved by a cybo-cop patrol. The cybo-cops started to interrogate DiFool about what had happened. At that moment John started to recollect the “brain cleanse” he had experienced many years before, and started to remember the existence of Luz. The cybo-cops, who were under the orders of the Supra-divinoid and were prepared to kill John in case he remembered, where about to attack John when suddenly an explosion took place outside. The explosion had been cause by a scarab, who rescued John before also being destroyed. Still escaping from the cybo-cops John hid in the sewers. Afterwards, John encountered Deepo (who was now once again unable to speak human laguage). They both ran into a crowd, and observed how a strange virus was starting to infect the citizens.
The cybo-cops surrounded John, but just when the Supra-divinoid was about to order his execution the connection was lost and the cybo-cops were unable to shoot. Suddenly, a giant dragonfly, who was the one suppressing the techno system, come flying and saved John, while Deepo was left behind. The dragonfly flyed to the surface, and showed John who was behind the spread of the biophage virus: The Bethacodon, a being which had been created by Techno-experimentation, and posed a threat to all living things.
While the dragonfly flied John to the Mother Tree, where he met Elohim, the Bethacodon took over the Prezident's and the Supra-divinoid's body. The new Bethacodon-prezident ordered to have Deepo brought to him. Deepo was captured, and the Prezident tried to extract information from him without success. The Bethacodon-prezident had prepared a tantalic probe that retained its full ultra-nuclear charge and was ready to launch on autopilot, but he needed a target. He taped into Deepo’s subconscious to get information about John's whereabouts, but Deepo's brainwave was going in circles. The Bethacodon-prezident concluded that DiFool was directly under them, in the antipode. The Bethacodon-prezident launched the probe into the undergorund, with Deepo inside it. Just moments before the probe hit the Mother Tree, John managed to escape to outer space. However, Deepo had apparently died as a result of the explosion.
A new Deepo from a parallel dimension[]
In outer space, John's ship was swallowed by a hole that served as a conduit between universes, which allowed him to meet DiFools from other dimensions. First, he met an "ugly" DiFool who was wearing a blazer with stars in the arms. The “ugly” DiFool said that Orh had dissolved his universe to create a new one, and then had kicked him out. Both DiFools started fighting, when suddenly Deepo appeared flying. The DiFools started fighting over who was the real owner of Deepo, when Deepo suddenly started talking and explained to them that both of their Deepos were dead, and he was actually from another universe, where his master is Sami Siri Johnan DiFool (who also materialized at that moment). Finally another DiFool appeared, named Seraphim, who told the rest of the DiFools that they should head to Tortuga Island where Luz and Kaimann lived.
Spitting out the Incal[]
At Tortuga Island the four DiFools were attacked by cannibal pirates, raping Seraphim. However, they managed to escape, and found Olaf, who explained to them that some time ago the Island had been attacked by Goubas, who had taken Luz prisoner and that in the interim Kaimann had started to mutate into his saurian form. The four DiFools boarded the spaceship and started to head towards the Gounas' planet. In the ship Deepo suddenly barfed, spitting out the Incal that was inside of him. At that point the Incal considered that the "ugly" DiFool was the most capable DiFool of the four others for this mission, and vaporized the rest, explaining that their spirits were now within the reaming DiFool. Then, the Incal went back insider Deepo, who once again gained the ability to speak.
Defeating the Bethacodon[]
John managed to rescue Luz, and they want back to Terra 2014 to launch a rebellion against the Bethacodon with the help of Elohim. John and Luz, aided by Kill Wolfhead and Kaimann's forces succesfully broke into the Floating Palace. There, John DiFool and Kaimann sacrificed themselves to defeat the Bethacodon and the Meca-Prezident.
After the Bethacodon was defeated Elohim connected his arms to the ground and started healing the planet from its center outwards. The Archnagels started singing, which stirred up a flood of emotion, creating vibrations that affect the senses. Gorgo self-appointed himself king, choosing Luz as his queen. Gorgo tried to rape Luz but Deepo stopped him with the power of the Incal, after which he spat out the Incal.
The Incal spoke to Luz, explaining her that the war still wasn’t over because Black Vampires still possessed the metallic virus and could threaten the bio-universe, and that her love for DiFool was the only universal antidote. Luz, with the help of Elohim, reconstituted John through the power of true love, allowing her feelings for him to fuse his cells once again.
